The 124 Japanese senators who were newly elected or successfully re-elected in July last year reported a record low of 18.35 million yen ($170000) per capita, according to Kyodo news agency 6. Many have identified loopholes in the property declaration system of the Japanese parliamentarians because they do not have to submit evidence to confirm the amount of property they have declared, nor do they have to declare shares held by their spouses or children, as well as assets such as ordinary deposits and cash held by themselves.
